What was the biggest challenge is decorating this room?
It's long and narrow, which can create a bit of a bottleneck when a few of us enter our home at the same time. By placing the bench away from the door it leads you to come in and keep going into the hall to sit down and remove shoes, bags, etc, theoretically solving the bottleneck problem (I say theoretically because my children tend to go as far as the cabinet and sit on the floor to remove their shoes!). The other challenge was adding enough storage but the narrow Ikea cabinet provides ample storage for shoes while the bench holds baskets containing hats, gloves, socks, shopping bags and even stationery. The shelf above is handy for more storage and adding a couple of tin baskets provides a place for us to stash our phones and wallets.

What kind of style/feel are you going for?
Functional but homely with simple pieces in white, keeping with the white-furniture theme throughout our home. Touches like the fabric on the bench and a witty slogan on the mirror add personality.

I found a gorgeous copper frame for the wall above the meter cabinet at a car boot sale (like a flea market) [pic in updated bio]. The mirror used to be in our bedroom in our last home and I added "Hey gorgeous" to the wooden frame with scrapbooking rubons - guests are always charmed when they spot it!
