Açai Bowls Are About to Change the Way You Do Breakfast
Perhaps you've heard of this of-the-moment alternative to the smoothie that's spread through the health food world (and Instagram) like wildfire, but if you're new to the idea or yet to indulge in its supreme superfood powers, prepare to be amazed — it's what breakfast dreams are made of.
What is an açai bowl?
At its most basic level, an açai bowl can be considered a really thick smoothie, so thick that you can eat it with a spoon. Açai powder or frozen puree is blended together with fruit and milk (almond, soy, coconut or straight up cow's milk) until creamy and smooth then topped with any assortment of ingredients ranging from fruits to nuts and seeds.
Why give them a try?
So why all the hype? It all comes down to its namesake ingredient — açai. Jam-packed with antioxidants, namely anthocyanins, and vitamin C, the açai berry is associated with everything from helping with digestion to improved cellular health and flawless skin. But that's just the beginning. The additional ingredients provide protein, fiber and healthy fats to round out the fruit base and create a balanced meal, providing you with the energy and nutrients you need to take on the day. There's not much not to love.
Where can you buy açai?
Açai powder and purée can be found at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, local health food stores, as well as online through Amazon. If you're not ready to invest in an entire bag of the stuff, you can grab an açai bowl at a local juice or smoothie joint.
How do you make an açai bowl?
A high-powered blender is a good place to start. Then it's just a matter of choosing ingredients you love, with frozen fruits, bananas, milk and nut butters being açai bowl standards. Finding the right texture will take some practice and they're exactly grab-and-go friendly, so maybe take a pass if you're pressed for time. But once you've gotten the hang of the whole thing, you'll never look back.
