Bring The Beach Home With A DIY Towel Rack
No vacation this summer? Bring the beach feel to your home with this towel rack made with colorful cleats and rustic wood. Use for after pool towels or in a nautical themed bathroom to add a pop of color and summer to your space!
What You'll Need:
- 6" metal cleats with screws
- Thin piece of live edge wood (1/2-1" thick)
- Thick grit sand paper or sanding block
- Spray paint in various colors
- Lacquer or finish
- Drill or impact driver with phillips head screw driver & thin drill bit
Step 1: Spray paint your cleats and screws in various colors. Here we used an ombre blue/ green scheme. Or use a simple monochromatic scheme for a more simplistic look. Spray an even coat on the tops of the screws and cleats and let dry. Flip over and spray a coat on the bottom once the top is dry.
Step 2: While your spray paint is drying, sand the edges of your wood (which can be cut to size at your hardware store or from the supplier where purchased). Sand down any splinters off the live edge of the wood and any sharp spots around the edges.
Step 3: Once your wood is smooth, clean off any excess wood shavings with a dry cloth and use lacquer to finish the wood.
Step 4: Once your wood and cleats are done drying, you can put the cleats on the wood to create the rack. Mark out where you want your cleats and pre-drill holes with a thin drill bit.
Step 5: Finish up the rack by drilling your screws and cleats into the wood.
Hang your rack by screwing it directly into the wall (on the ends) or by adding brackets to the back and hang on screws placed directly into the wall. Use a level to straighten it up. Once you're finished, hang up your hat and relax!
