Craft A DIY Tool Holder for Father’s Day!
Looking for the perfect gift for the handy Dad this Father's day? Show him how much you appreciate all his help with those projects with this crafty tool holder. Fill it up with his tools or purchase a new tool set to stow away inside. This holder both stores and sorts his tools, making it easy to grab and go next time he's working on (or helping you!) with a project!
What You'll Need:
- Rotary cutter
- Straight edge with measure
- Cutting mat
- Fabric scissors
- Heavy duty machine needle (denim needles work well)
- Sewing machine
- Pins or clips
- Dad's tools or a new tool set
Step 1: Cut a piece of leather hide to your desired dimensions. Our piece here is approximately 24" wide by 12" tall. We used the natural curve of the hide for the top instead of cutting it straight.
Step 2: Cut a piece of fabric (we chose a masculine plaid flannel) that will eventually become the holder for the tools. This piece we cut 26" wide by 8" tall. It will come about half way up the leather portion but you need to allow enough room all around for hems and seam allowance.
Step 3: Pin the top portion of the fabric at a half inch seam allowance to hem the top.
Step 4: Sew the top hem.
Step 5: With the hem at the top of the fabric and your fabric right side up, attach to your leather with pins or clips (clips work well with the bulkiness of the leather). You will fold in the excess fabric on the sides and the top to create a hem.
Step 6: Sew along the bottom where you pinned to attach the fabric to the leather. Leave the sides pinned, you will sew these at the end.
Step 7: Sew straight lines from the bottom of the leather up to the opening of the fabric. This will create pockets between the leather and the fabric. Continue to do this starting from one side of the leather and working your way to the other. Roll up the fabric and leather as you go so that you can continue to fit it in your machine.
Step 8: Finish up the pockets by sewing the ends. Readjust the seams at the end as needed with any fabric shifting. Cut off excess strings.
Step 10: Sew a piece of ribbon in the middle of one of the outside edges. This will allow for the holder to be tied up in a roll when not open and in use.
Fill up the pockets with tools, roll back up and gift wrap (or bag) for Dad!
