Decor Confidential: 10 Tips to Decorate Like a Celeb

There’s no denying that we’re fascinated by the secret lives of celebs, and there’s nothing more private than their homes. To feed our voyeurism, we got SFA Design’s Kara Smith, one of Hollywood’s hottest designers, to share her top 10 tips.

TAKE RISKS

Making it in Hollywood means taking chances, and the same philosophy goes into decorating. “Use bold colors, unusual textures and statement pieces," Smith says. We suggest an eye-catching kilim rug and sheepskin for texture. Art is also a great way to make a statement in a room, and with so many affordable art sites like Exhibition A, Artsy and Paddle8, it's available to everyone.

DEVELOP A THEME

This is one of the biggest secrets that decorators know, but you don't—until now. You can't just think about one piece, like a rug or sofa, or even just one room. “Decide what vibe you want for your entire home," Smith advises. “Start with the big plan: What's the story you're trying to tell? What should it say? Whether it's inspired by a place or passion, the overall theme keeps the [look] cohesive. Each room should speak to it in a different way."

MAKE YOUR BEDROOM A SANCTUARY

We couldn't agree more with Smith on her bedroom philosophy: “Your bedroom should be your retreat. It's a place meant for relaxation and sleeping. Keep everything else out – no work or stress. A-Listers know how important sleep is, and how necessary it is to disconnect from the rest of the world."

CREATE A CLOSET

Even if your bedroom is only 200 square feet, make room for a big closet, or at least section off a dressing area. “Functional storage that keeps your clothes organized is a must. You also need great lighting and mirrors to see how you look from every angle," Smith notes. She also says to remember that when it comes to shoe storage, make sure you have room for tall boots.

ENTERTAIN LIKE A ROCKSTAR

“Whether it's a fantastic bar cart with all the essentials or a built-out home area, having the trimmings to throw an incredible party is key," Smith says. We especially love a chrome bar cart—to glam up those boring bottles of booze—in a designated area of your living space. Even if you have a tiny apartment, you can do this. The trick is to arrange all your accoutrements from tallest to shortest, while keeping everything organized so you're always ready to whip up a martini.

SET UP A HOME THEATER

Okay, you probably don't have space for an in-home movie theater (that's not what we're suggesting!), but you can have a chill setup for you and your guests to watch your favorite flicks. “Comfy seating and a large enough screen—so you never have to leave the comfort of your home to go to the movies—is the foundation of a good home theater," Smith suggests.

MAKE ROOM FOR A WORKSPACE

“Creating an area of your house that's inspiring and stimulates productivity is major," says Smith. “Natural light in your work area or a quiet corner in your home that allows you to concentrate is key. Whatever it is that you do, having a designated area for it is very important."

LIFESTYLE-PROOF THE DESIGN

Smith gives wise advice when she says, “When it comes down to decorating, you have to make sure your selections fit with your lifestyle. Think beyond aesthetics: You have to apply a functionality filter to your design decisions. You need a beautiful home that you can live in comfortably without it interfering with your daily life, or making you worry about it getting a little messy."

THINK TIMELESS

Some celebs have a tendency to follow trends a little too closely, especially when it comes to their wardrobe. And while taking risks is a great thing (see tip one!) Smith suggests that you should “make sure your bold design choices are statements pieces that you not only love today, but will still love tomorrow. Pinterest can be very persuasive…design your home while keeping your lifestyle in mind, without getting too caught up in the latest craze."

SHOW YOUR PERSONALITY

What do you love to be surrounded by: your friends, your family, art, music? “More than anything else, your home should be a reflection of you and capture the essence of your personality. Infuse it with elements that are special to you and represent what you love," Smith says. Which takes her tip back to the secret of a theme — it's easy to infuse your home with the little things you love, whether it's a sculpture or figurine, photograph or pattern. A great designer like Smith is focused on infusing your home with you, so get to it!
