DIY Paper Wall Peonies for Mother’s Day Brunch
Is it a coincidence that Mother's Day happens to be celebrated during the same month when flowers bloom? Mothers are beautiful people and deserve beautiful celebrations. Dress up your Mother's Day soiree or brunch with some pretty petaled paper peonies! Create these large oversized tissue paper peonies to place up on the wall as the perfect backdrop to your festivities with Mom. And once the celebrations are over, send Mom home with a few to enjoy for the rest of spring!
What You'll Need:
- Tissue paper in various shades of pink and coral
- Green crepe or tissue paper
- Floral wire
- Wire cutters
Step 1: With a few pieces of tissue paper stacked on top of one another, cut out a square. The larger the square the bigger the flower at the end. The number of layers needed varies too based on how full you would like your flower. For a simple, delicate flower use about 5-6 sheets of tissue. For a more full flower you may want 7-8.
Step 2: With all your squares stacked, accordion fold your tissue paper. Thinner folds will produce a fuller looking flower and thicker folds will produce a more delicate flower.
Step 3: Stack all your folds on top of each other and cut out a curve at each end of the paper. Peonies can be both soft and jagged. If you want a more delicate, soft peony use a well rounded cut. If you want something a little more natural looking use a more pointy cut.
Step 4: Use a small piece of floral wire to keep all the folds in place down the center of the folded up tissue paper. Allow the ends of the wire to stick off to the side. This will help you later to hold on to the back center of the flower when you are spreading apart the layers.
Step 5: Spread apart the accordion folds so that the ends of top of the paper meet the ends of the bottom.
Step 6: Using gentle hands, slowly pull out the first layer of the tissue to stick straight out at the center of the folds.
Step 7: Continue to pull out layers towards the center to add "pouf" to your bloom. With each end of the accordion fold, wrap around the other side (to cover the gap between the top and bottom folds) as much as possible to really round out your flower.
Step 8: Once all your layers are pulled outwards and your bottom layer is laying flat (for attachment to the wall), trim up any jagged "petals" or flatten out the center by cutting back some of the excess tissue as desired for your finished look.
Step 9: To create leaves for your flower, cut a simple leaf shape from green tissue or crepe paper. Attach to the back of the peony bloom with tape
Step 10: Stick your finished bloom up on the wall with painter's tape and admire your handy work. Then get working on a few more in different sizes and colors!
Spread them out on a wall above a side board or credenza for the perfect back drop to your Mother's Day Brunch celebration!
