6 Simple Tricks to Personalize Your Closet

Maybe you share a closet with your other half (well, shared is more of a 70/30 hers-to-his ratio) or perhaps you have a closet of your own. Whether it's a major walk-in (I'm jealous!) or a tiny cubbyhole that's exposed to the rest of your room, you can totally turn that boring white box into something special. Here are my six super-simple tricks to transform it into a dressing area that's all you.

1. Upgrade Your Hangers

You've graduated from college so that also means you've graduated to not plastic hangers. Seriously, throw out those mismatched rainbow colored ones you've collected over the years—including the flimsy wire ones from your dry cleaner. Give your clothes the respect they deserve and invest in a cedar wood set. Yes, they cost a little more but, they'll last longer and you'll thank me whenever you look in your closet to see everything hanging at the same level.

2. Change the Light Fixture

Swap out the standard issue lighting to something that reflects your decor personality. Toss the frosted white dome with crappy lighting—you know it's doing nothing for your completion anyways. Replace it with a petite crystal chandelier for a Parisian boudoir feel or something sleek and modern like a small Sputnik pendant.

3. Add Unique Hardware

Whether you have built-ins or a dresser, change out the hardware to something more interesting. I love these druzy quartz knobs for a natural-chic look.

4. Use Baskets for Organization

Get your space organized, pronto! I'm guilty of keeping too many pairs of denim that go unworn and extra blankets for when it turns colder than a winter's bone outside. Sea grass woven baskets are a genius solution to storing stacks of blankets or hiding miscellaneous knick-knacks. Trust me, use this as your closet junk drawer and top it off with a perfectly folded throw that will fool others that you're totally organized.

5. Lay Down a Rug

A rug is always an easy route to spruce up a space. Try a shaggy patterned one for a contemporary way to warm up your closet.

6. Display Your Accessories

While baskets are great for larger items, trays are ideal for jewelry and accessories. I prefer a mirrored tray over a jewelry box to display my favorite go-to items out in the open. It makes for easy access not to mention, it just looks chic.
